Something cool- check it out

There's this website that I like to check out every now and then, called electro^plankton. I found it when searching for an explanation of the glowing lil' animals i swam with in the ocean at night in ecuador. Anyway, the site (or weblog) is for posting new and cool inventions, designs, discoveries, etc. My favorite categories are hot science and design. The Eye of Mordor is Watching Us

Researchers made a break-thru this week when the Hubble Telescope photographed 2 planets orbiting a star very similar to our own. What's more the two planets seem to be within the habital zone - the area where it's just the right temperature to support liquid water. Unfortunately the system is over 130 light years away - longer than a human lifetime. More surprising to the researchers is the fact that the system looks like the Eye of Mordor.

Nature Has A Sense Of Humor

I really do believe Mother Nature has a sense of humor. This spider found only in Hawaii is called the Happy Spider for obvious reasons. Sure the markings keep predators away but they also make us smile.

A camera for the blind
One of the 2008 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) winners is the Touch Sight camera. When we think of cameras, we think of recording bouncing photons off mirrors. So how would a visually impaired person use this? This camera records sounds and displays imagery via 3D embossing allowing the person to relive the moment by two other senses, hearing and touch. Just brilliant!

Speaker Balls like Peas in a Pod

The Pea Speaker concept by Lu Le is pretty fan-*******-tastic. Pardon my language. The tower holds 7 bluetooth wireless speaker spheres that can be tossed about to create dynamic audio environments. Tho not true surround sound, the concept is unique and from a tech standpoint, well thought out. Recharging happens via induction in the tower. DO WANT!
